Live Theatre
This is where I do stage crew and management work.
Jam N Hop 2025
Jam N Hop is an annual RP performance held mainly for incoming Year 1 students before the beginning of the school year. It is an introduction to the CREATE Club which compromises of many dance and music performing arts CCAs.
Jam N Hop 2025 included talents from Style Groovaz Crew, Capoeira, RP Selatra, Beats Encore, Chinese Ensemble, Jammerz Arena and Replug.
Role: Assistant Stage Manager
This production spanned from January to April 2025.
During the countless rehearsals and previews, I was responsible for ensuring that everybody is following the production schedule, accommodating to the performers' needs, and assisting the stage manager and student producer with logistics. This includes setting up and spiking venues for rehearsals and previews and briefing performers and stage crew on the agenda.
My Experience
During showday, I was responsible for assisting the stage manager with calling cues specifically for the stage crew. Prior to that, we would go through dry runs of the script and ensure the cues are well-timed and appropriate.
This was the most complex production I have participated in, let alone the biggest role I have taken. Compared to my Assistant Stage Manager role in Still I Rise, this was much more hectic and required even more learning on the spot. I was introduced to more complex protocols and responsibilities I have never done before. There was an additional department that we had to collaborate with as well - the Video Crew - where they film and record the entire performance to broadcast live for incoming Year 1 students watching through a screen.
Graduates Night 2025
Graduates' Night is an annual event held for Republic Polytechnic graduates to celebrate their accomplishments throughout their years in poly, hang out with friends and catch up with old ones. The event spanned from around 3pm to 9pm.
The interest groups involved in the event performances were Genre (Guitar Ensemble), String Ensemble, Replug, Style Groovas Crew, Capoeira, Beats Encore and Electronic Music Production.
Electronic Music Production (EMP) performing Beauty and a Beat by Justin Bieber ft. Nicki Minaj.
This was one of the last items in the event.
Role: Stage Crew
I was responsible for handling audio equipment, ensuring transitions between performance items are smooth and seamless, accommodating the performers and relaying information between stage manager, technicians and performers.
My Experience
Our stage crew was mostly made up of less experienced members with me having the most experience. The stage manager relied on me to help guide and teach them about the technical side of things like connecting cables and handling equipment.
Because I was the most experienced in the stage crew and the stage manager was relying on me, I had more responsibilities than usual. It sort of made me the assistant stage manager. This helped me further develop skills which I can apply in the future when I take on the role of assistant stage manager more often.
Still I Rise
Still I Rise is a collaboration between Flame of the Forest and The Republic Cultural Centre. The show provided the opportunity for many student talents from String Ensemble, Chinese Ensemble, Genre (Guitar Ensemble), Jammerz Arena, Indian Cultural Group and Gamelan Naga Ensemble to showcase their skills and artistry.
Role: Assistant Stage Manager
I was responsible for helping the Stage Manager call and execute cues, leading a group of stage crew and tending to the performers' needs.
My Experience
This was my first time being an Assistant Stage Manager. I made quite a number of mistakes and felt disappointed in myself. I did not know some of the terminologies used, I inaccurately called some cues and caused slight delays. There were some instances where I did not take initiative to do what I was supposed to do because I was afraid and unsure of myself.
However, as I got used to bearing the responsibilities of an assistant stage manager overtime, I executed my tasks effectively and ensured a smooth, enjoyable experience throughout for the audience and performers during showday.
World Drum Night VI
A major performance focusing on percussion instruments. It showcases many talents from both internal and external groups: ZingO, ITE CE Soul Percussion, NP JCC Taiko, NP Baracuda Batucada, ITE CW Oeste Percussive Movement, RP Beats Encore, SMU Samba Masala, SMU Rentak, ITE CC Batidas Centro, NP Hatsu Ryo and RP Chinese Ensemble.
Role: Stage Crew
I helped with the moving of props, instruments and ensuring seamless transitions between items. I also closely communicated with the assistant stage managers, ensuring smooth and effective coordination with the team.
My Experience
This was only my third time working as a backstage crew member and this was a major performance with a massive cast. I was slightly anxious due to this but gained confidence in my abilities during the rehearsals and previews prior to the show. There were a few issues I had like miscommunication and language barriers as I did not know some of the terminologies used at the time, but I picked up on them along the way. Overall, I had a lot of fun learning about production and the backstage scope.
